SMTP-AUTH and your mail client.

Okay. First, I will say that not all mail clients are the same. Some will not have the same options in the same places as others. That's somewhat for you to figure out which I am sorry about. However, being that I don't use Windows as a desktop machine, I can't really look at each mainstream mail client to figure out how to set up the SMTP-AUTH options. So, I'm going to give you the information you need in order to make SMTP-AUTH work once you figure out how to set the options. If anyone out there would like to add to this thread for certain mail client setups, please feel free. Otherwise, let's get started...

The first thing to know is that none of the ports have changed. So, you can use 25 just like you did before. DO NOT CHANGE THIS PORT FOR SMTP.

Secondly, make sure that your SSL/TLS settings are set to use the "STARTTLS" command to initiate the authentication. Using just plain "SSL" or something similar will not work.

At the current time, the TKCNet mail server only supports "PLAIN" and "LOGIN" style authentication through SMTP-AUTH. So, make sure you are not using CRAM-MD5, DIGEST-MD5, NTLM, etc. Usually, just setting the authentication type to "Automatic" should suffice (It's worth a shot).

Last but not least, you have to remember that you are still using your full email address as the username. So, if you're email address is nitwit@thekeyboardcowboys.org your username will also be nitwit@thekeyboardcowboys.org. NOT JUST NITWIT! I cannot stress that enough.

Well, that should just about cover the information you will need in order to set up your mail client for TKC Networks' SMTP-AUTH system.

Again, any questions or comments can be posted here in the forum or on the mailing lists which are located at http://lists.thekeyboardcowboys.org.

Enjoy, folks!
